150 LUNCHEON ON THE GRASS. 1866

Oil on canvas. 130 X 181 cm. Inv. No 3307 Signed and dated lower left: Claude Monet 66 In the 1860s many future Impressionists, such as Frederic Bazille, executed large-size pictures pursuing but one aim — the depiction of the human figure (or figures) en plein air. It was with the same aim in mind that Monet began work on his large canvas, Luncheon on the Grass, at Chailly-en-Biere in the summer of 1865. He intended it for the 1866 Salon exhibition but was dissatisfied with the final result and, in all probability, later cut the picture into three parts, two of which have survived to the present day (the left-hand part is in The Louvre, the central part in the Eknayan Collection in Paris). All trace of the right-hand part has been lost. It is possible that his failure with the large composition prompted Monet to make a smaller version of it, although there are differences of opinion on this matter. Some scholars think it is a sketch for the large

painting (H. Adhemar, G. Bazin), while others see it as a second version made by the painter (Ch. Sterling, N. Yavorskaya). The author's dating of the Pushkin Museum picture, comparisons with the surviving parts of the large canvas and, finally, X-ray photographs of this picture taken in 1963 and 1973, all tend to support the conclusion that this is a smaller replica of the original large version of Luncheon on the Grass. The model for the female figures in the composition was Camille Doncieux, Monet's fiancee whom he married in 1870; several male figures were painted from Monet's friend Frederic Bazille. Monet apparently realized his initial concept of the picture in a pencil drawing, which in 1947 was in the collection of F. Bazille, the artist's cousin. Monet had several times painted the landscape without figures (as can be seen from Chailly-en-Biere, 1865, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen), and then started work on the scene as a whole. Soon after its completion (according to G. Wildenstein, already in 1874)

the Moscow picture was in the collection of the French opera singer J.-B. Faure, who sold it to Paul Durand-Ruel for 18,000 francs on February 12, 1901; he, in turn, sold it to Paul Cassirer for 30,000 francs in Berlin, and it was probably there that it was bought by Sergei Shchukin (between 1901 and 1908). Provenance: until 1901 The J.-B. Faure Collection, Paris; 1901 The P. Durand-Ruel Collection, Paris; from 1901, February 12, The P. Cassirer Collection, Berlin; until 1918 The S.
