Oil on canvas. 61 X 50 cm. Inv. No 1067 Signed lower right: H. Robert G. L. The subject is symbolic in meaning, and can be traced to the artist's release from confinement in 1794. A preparatory drawing for the picture, as well as a pendant to this drawing, on the theme Birds Being Imprisoned in a Cage, were in the Count Vallombrosa Collection. Another drawing with a slightly different composition is in the Musee Atger at Montpellier.
