The picture was painted in 1905 in Paris and belongs to Picasso's Pink period. The motif of a figure balancing on a ball recurs in Picasso's work. Related to the Pushkin Museum picture are a pen drawing (in a private collection, Paris) and two watercolors (one in the Cone Collection, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the other in a private collection, Paris).
