The picture was commissioned by Peter the Great,
whose portrait Nattier painted in Amsterdam in 1717.
Shortly after that it passed out of public sight and
was believed to be lost. It was discovered in the
museum of Sychovka, a town in the Smolensk Region,
in 1926. A copy is in the Ostankino Estate Museum
near Moscow.
