Oil on canvas. 34 X 44 cm. Inv. No 3994 This picture is a companion painting to Fortune-teller (La Disease de bonne aventure) whose whereabouts is unknown. Before it entered The Pushkin Museum, The Maypole Celebration was also believed to have been lost after the auction of 1805 and was known only from the engraving by J.-B. Patas. It is a mature Pater, which may be dated to the early 1730s. A variant was in the M. de Rothschild Collection in Paris. Provenance: 1772 Auction of the E.
